Our
Story

The Digby & Area Community Gardens Society is a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 2014 with garden beds located beside the Don Brown Memorial Ball Field.

In 2021, we doubled the plots and gardeners, added community beds, received grants to fence the garden, and built a storage shed, gazebo, and greenhouse.

We could not have done this without our major partners, the Digby & Area
Recreation Commission (DARC) and the Town of Digby.

We've also been sponsored and supported by many local businesses including:

  • AA Munro Insurance

  • Acadian Seaplants

  • Fairway Insurance

  • Thexton’s Greenhouse

  • Digby Lion's Club

  • Wilson’s Home Hardware

  • Digby Atlantic Superstore

Core Values

Continual Learning

Continual learning is not just about acquiring new skills or knowledge; it's about cultivating an adaptable and resilient mindset. It's the willingness to step outside your comfort zone, challenge your assumptions, and explore uncharted territories.

Abundance

Each season brings a new abundance of fresh produce, vibrant flowers, and life-giving soil. This abundance is a reflection of the boundless creativity and resilience of nature - and of the human spirit when it is connected to the land.

By embracing abundance, we shift away from a scarcity mindset that breeds competition and fear. Instead, we open ourselves up to collaboration, generosity, and the profound satisfaction that comes from contributing to something greater than ourselves.

Environmental stewardship

As stewards of the land, we have a responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world for future generations. This ethos of stewardship transcends the boundaries of the garden, inspiring us to approach all aspects of our lives with a reverence for the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

Equitable Access

Equitable access to food, adequate in terms both of quantity and of quality, should be provided for all members of the population, especially those who suffer a disadvantage or social exclusion.

Community Collaboration

When neighbors come together to tend to the soil, plant seeds, and watch them blossom, something magical happens. The act of collaboration sparks a sense of joy and purpose, as each person contributes their unique skills and perspectives to the greater good. Even small acts of giving by people and businesses make a large impact.

Patience

As community gardeners, we learn to appreciate the value of slowing down, of being fully present in the moment. Each stage - from soil preparation to the final crop - demands the willingness to move at the pace of nature. It's a practice that translates into all areas of our lives, reminding us that true fulfillment often lies in the journey, not the destination.
